5 Years of Stronglifts 5x5
In 2017, I started a beginner lifting program. I was looking for a gym program I could enjoy and not burn out. Stronglifts had a couple qualities that made it a no-brainer for me.
- Had an extensive article describing what to do and every possible combination of what can happen and what is needed.
- I could see incremental progress.
- Was not cardio heavy.
- It was easy to remember. Everything is 5. 5 sets, 5 reps, 5 exercises, 5 minutes of rest.
Five years ago when I started this program, I weighed around 140-145lbs. I’m now 180lbs and overall much stronger but still doing the same Stronglifts 5x5 program.
Lift | Max | Reps |
---|---|---|
Squat | 245lbs | 5 reps |
Deadlift | 315lbs | 3 reps |
Bench Press | 220lbs | 4 reps |
Overhead Press | 155lbs | 1 rep |
Barbell Row | 205lbs | 3 reps |
I don’t have any particular reason for continuing this program. I’m just too lazy to read up on another program and the inertia of this program keeps me going. I also fine it amusing that I’ve been doing a beginner’s program for 5 years at this point and it’s interesting to see how much progress I can milk out of this program. I don’t use belts, weight lifting shoes, take Creatine or other supplements (I occasionally eat protein bars), or otherwise optimize my performance. I think in the upcoming year, I’ll reexamine my gym habits and try and adjust for better performance.
