- As they step to regain balance, twist away from them to sweep them
- Grab the fist/wrist of hand that is overhooking
- Get upper foot on hip
- Finish by bringing your upper body up and having your arms stick to your chest
- Overhook opponent’s foot
- Using the same side foot that you used to hook, place on opponent’s hip
- Fall to side of your hook

Alternative: If you can’t pull free
- Move to the side more and step forward (front foot would be the foot that opponent has on a foot lock) so opponent is on back and your are in half guard, side control or knee on belly or something
- If opponent doesn’t have a solid grip on your upper knee, use that knee to follow opponent and bring it to the ground
- Try and clear your foot across the opponent’s leg so they can’t defend (usually you end up with a knee on one side and foot on the other)
- Square up legs to wall off opponent
- Finish by bringing up and twisting, if you have a gi you can hold your own lapel
- Use hand to cup and lift/pull opponent’s knee
- Arm should be used as a wall so opponent can not follow you
- Do a technical standup type of motion to go to the side and try and free your leg from opponent’s knee (opponent’s foot shouldn’t have cleared your entire leg/be on the same side as their knee)
- With your free leg, hook opponent’s leg (the one that you are holding with your hand)
- Push opponent’s knee away from you with your hard
- Use your hook and shin to push opponent’s leg away from you
- You can take back if opponent does no adjust
- If opponent can adjust in time they can go back to the original footlock position
