Near side armbar, arm is inside pushing against your face/neck
- With hand that is farthest away from opponent’s face, reach under and cup opponent’s elbow
- Maintain pressure with your head and pin it to their body
- Pivot your knee (that is farthest away from opponent’s head towards their head) so that your foot is under their shoulder you are trapping
- Use your free hand to push past their face to make them turn, your hand should pass them and be on the ground or near it and be applying pressure with your forearm
- Step over
Alternative: You maintain good grip on opponent’s arm and it is in your armpit
- Finish by pinching your knees and straightening your body
Alternative: You don’t have good grip on opponent’s hand
- Step over with remaining leg and armbar normally
Near side armbar, arm is outside hooking your body
- Get head control and push them forward on their side
- Pinch your elbow so they can’t pull out their hook
- Pivot your knee so your leg is to the side along their back and your foot is under their shoulder
- With the hand that is not holding their hook you can pull on their arm towards you for more pressure/tension
- Bring leg that didn’t pivot over opponent’s face
- Release the hook and grab it with the other hand for the armbar
